Northern Virginia students focus their efforts on a variety of environmental problems, and NoVA Outside is pleased to highlight their work. Browse the gallery to learn more about the way these students are making a difference in our community.

Genevieve Kopp installed bat boxes, led a field trip for second graders, and created a website to promote bat conservation, receiving the Girl Scout Gold Award
For his Youth Conservation Leadership Institute project with the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District, Scout Thomas Ye led multiple conservation events focusing on “Leave No Trace” principles at Great Falls National Park, including litter clean-ups and public outreach, in coordination with Boy Scouts Troop 55 and the National Park Service
Maddie Goff-Glennon led four volunteer stream clean-up events at Four Mile Run in Arlington and Alexandria
Mrudula Rapaka and students at the Virginia Youth Climate Cooperative aim for youth-driven policy solutions to climate change and environmental justice
Quinn Laffey aims for lasting impact with his Sea Scout project to promote and facilitate the recycling of fishing line
For restoration planting at Four Mile Run in Alexandria, Matthew Haymes built exclosures to prevent geese and carp from rooting out tidal wetland plantings to go in later in May
Alex Boezer led volunteers in marking 172 storm drains in the Mantua neighborhood, within the Accotink Creek Watershed
Zain Rasheed’s Eagle Scout project aims to prevent erosion by educating trail users, planting native plants, and slowing the overland flow of water
Aidan Flood’s Eagle Scout project removied invasive plants to help restore the natural ecosystem of Difficult Run Stream Valley Park
Zane Javeri is recycling tennis balls and educating the public about where they can recycle theirs for his Eagle Scout project
Aditya Kalva is working toward the BSA Distinguished Conservation Service Award with a project removing invasive plants
